The Duracell Project
United States
Приєднався 4 вер 2021
I'm Matt. I am refitting and restoring a legendary race boat, known as Duracell. Duracell was built and sailed by legendary American sailor, Mike Plant, who beat the American record for solo circumnavigation in the first Vendee Globe in 1989. I am lucky to own this piece of American racing history. With a storied past and a 25 year pause on the hard, Duracell's story now continues with us. Follow along as I refit Duracell into a fast and comfortable cruising home. My wife, Janneke and I create weekly episodes for this channel documenting every step of our project.

Love the piano jazz sections. It’s got this ‘Mr. Rodger’s visits a friend who makes cool stuff’ feel that’s just the best.
AWESOME BOAT ... I used to race a CHUCK BURNS 40 on the Florida gulf coast, phrf was 80 My friend HAL ROTH raced around the world many times on Whisper and other BIG ULDB's
What a BEAUTIFUL baby! Congrats to all three of you! Oh yes... and to the 'inspector' too!
How does a yacht end up hitting a container vessel. Was John sleeping ?
yes, he was. And a radar malfunction.
10k is awfully small for a blue water boat. No wonder that boat set a record for circumnavigating the world. Really nice looking lines
As a child I remember this boat wondering why a battery would be out on the ocean
Nice, but, how much for they camp?
oh yeah!
Hej hopp, gang !! As for this long chain tunnel, there will be water coming together with the chain, but you have some sort of drainage?? Maybe some sort of rubber under the chain, might make it less noisy?? A sheet of rubber could be applied if need be....Just an idea, that popped up in me head....As I understand, there will be some sort of lid over the chain channel? Ah,well, you and your skilled wife are on top of all things, I am sure..... Allda bestest from mikke in sweden...;-D
We’ll discuss this weeks episode!
Strange looking cat!
Just wondering if you've used any of the Total Boat Halcyon poly/varnish? I recently used it on the hatches going into the cabin on my boat and by the 4th coat I realized I'd made another mistake purchasing a water based product. On the bright side, when cured it sands off quite easily. What are your thoughts on the water born products? I keep trying more environmentaly concious products, but have yet to find one that offers any depth. Congratulations on the new little sailor. What an exciting time. Hope the sleep deprivation period you'll likely endure doesn't last too awfully long. Best wishes.
sorry couldn't finish watching the wonderful build do to the intrusive music. Content makers, there is nothing wrong with silence, or better yet the captured sound.
Congratulation beautiful baby sailor wish you all best ❤️.
Don't know if you'll see this Brilliant Idea... Perhaps try some good 1/2" kitchen cutting-boards to line the bottom of your chain-channel... Just a thought. Or I remember my dad's old sailing buddies lathing pulleys from the stuff Utility-workers might use when they are laying spools of big electrical cable... a 4x4" arc of white Delrin with a channel to guide the cable off the spools.
You WILL need an air dryer. I use the Harbor Freight version, $500 and works. Otherwise moistin air will ruin your paint.
Silly fact for you! My Father was in the oil and gas industry and we lived in Bontang, Borneo. Right on the Equator. Does it count that we kept visiting the Equator and jumping back and forth many times? Probably not, but as a child it was fun.
$100 dollars for a sailboat?! How big is the bathtub? For $100 all y'all would get is a toy yacht! For $1m you'd get something halfway decent!
I have conducted anchoring tests of SHHP type anchors (IACS classification of your anchor) for use on 150 foot patrol boats in both sand and mud bottoms. These types of anchor are very capable and prove to hold far more load than was required. Some of the testing looked at all chain rode versus a chain leader and rope. There is minimal difference between the two systems. We chose to use a chain leader and double braid nylon as the anchor rode, saving considerable weight located in the bow. The double braid rope is as strong (wet strength) as the chain and provides great shock reduction on the anchoring system. The US NAVY has a Design Data Sheet (DDS) that provides a method to calculate the load on the system in wind and current.

4:10 Here is a thought: How about selling pieces such as this one to raise money for the project? There must be people out there (or here) who would love to own and display a fragment of the boat Mike Plant sailed the Vendée Globe in 1989, and a simple piece like this can be easily reproduced in the garage. Who knows, perhaps if you guys auction occasional pieces removed from the boat, like the stainless chainplates, or any other interesting flotsam that must be on a pile in your yard... how about that keel!?... ; ⁰ )
It just dawned on me that a keel separate from the boat that belonged to Mike Plant is not really the ideal souvenir...
Congrats,,,, much luck to you all.. welcome to the little one
Congratulations! I believe the best time of your life just began! Just be careful and don't wash your working close in the same washing machine as the baby one.
good advice!
I was just wondering how wear resistant this chainchannel is going to be?
Oh my goodness......I hope you can copy & paste your responses about the tunnel lining!!!!😅 We will all be glued to the edges of our sofas as we await the answers to the questions on so many followers minds in next weeks episode. Incidentally, it was lovely to get a glimpse of your beautiful child. Sending best wishes to you all from Down Under. 🇦🇺😊🌻
lay in a strip of sacrificial alumunium w just a few glue dobs. chain chafe is real
Great idea moving weight aft... but think you've over complicated it... Anyway, thanks for a great watch as always!
Great progress on this week's episode!
Beside the construction I love your choice of UA-cam music. No copyright problems.
Amazing build, Thank you. love it
Not fed by any apt knowledge, i always wonder why there is not yet another material for weighty, noisy anker chain? Syntactic rope kinda…
Will there be a weep hole in the chain channel?
This one was for the eyes and the ears...nice music editor. ❤
As always great video Matt and enjoy the wee one as they grow to fast 🏴❤️🏴❤️
Sitting back..."Oh my gosh, there is ANOTHER hole in my boat"! Lest wish that's what goes thru my mind! How goes fatherhood? GOOD LUCK! your going to need it!
Abrasion sir… the chain is going to eat fiberglass for lunch! Wondering, What’s the plan to prevent that? Line the raceways with HDPE? And if so, wouldn’t that take up space in the track? I’ll be patient. I’m sure you got this.
Women are amazing. They can build a boat and a baby at the same time. Fabulous.
I love how the mast is laid perfectly parallel to the bowsprit.....
Are you going to put something in the bottom of the trough to keep the chain from wearing through the fiberglass?
Look forward to every episode. As soon as I realized you were going to build a trough below the deck cut out I was expecting you to build it from metal of some kind (or something more durable than fiberglass). Won't fiberglass get chewed up by the chain?
that is a handsome young lad! I am so happy for you both.
I assume chain with mud/sand adhering will be quite abrasive, how will you stop this sawing its way through the channel?
I've been wondering about a couple of things regarding your anchor and chain solution. I know I am lacking a lot of information regarding the reasoning behind the design but here are my observations. First, the way you have designed the anchor placement and rode channel it seems like it might be awkward to manage the anchor since it is always stowed, I think, under the bowsprit. I guess you will remove it when you are doing a long passage since you might not want it hanging out there. I usually will lash down my anchor on the deck, off of the roller, for a long passage. All of this action looks like it might be more involved since you can't just haul the anchor in over the bowsprit. I think I saw that it lives underneath the bowsprit. Second, and you may have a plan for this, it seems like it would be a good idea to have a substantially reinforced deck where the anchor chain tumbles into the locker. Not sure how fiberglass would hold up.
Is glass fibre wear resistant enough for the channel? Should you face the surfaces with stainless?
I wonder if the tunnel is strong enough? As it is much thinner than the deck itself..
How important is the shelf life of Epoxy? I still have 27 tubes of Edilon Epoxy. That they want to throw away at my work.
Will the plastic not be scratched by the anchor chain?
I saw some video about boats it’s small made from plastic covered by fiberglass The question could we make a large boat with this way Let’s say this boat will not sail only near the port ?
Jazz and fiberglass 👌🏼
Good job on this video and great music selection
